London: Printed by George Edward Eyre and William Spottiswoode, Printers... . A very good two volume set in original half leather binding. Folio.

"Explanatory statement, " by John Lambert, secretary, Local Government Board, prefixed to both volumes. ** "The Return of Owners of Land arose from the question put in the House of Lords on 19 February 1872 by the Earl of Derby to the Lord Privy Seal "whether it was the intention of Her Majesty's Government to take any steps for ascertaining the number of proprietors of land and houses in the United Kingdom, with the quantity of land owned by each proprietor". Thus, in 1872 Local Government Boards were ordered to compile a list of owners of land from ratings records. [One return was prepared for England and Wales, excluding the Metropolis, and separate ones prepared for Scotland in 1874, and Ireland in 1876.]. The Return shows the holding, in acres, roods and poles, and estimated yearly rental, of all holdings over 1 acre. It is organized by county and landowner and an address for each landowner also is given, but the address may not correspond to the location of the land and could be outside the county in question. The location of the land owned is not given. These returns are also sometimes referred to as the Modern Domesday. This Return is intended to show, with respect to England and Wales (exclusive of the Metropolis), The number and names of owners of land of one acre and upwards, whether built upon or not, in each County, with the estimated acreage and annual gross estimated rental of the property belonging to each owner. The number of owners of land, whether built upon or not, of less than one acre, with the estimated aggregate acreage and the aggregate gross estimated rental of the lands of such owners. The estimated extent of commons and waste lands in each County. The circumstances under which the Return was called for will be best explained by a reference to the following discussion which took place in the House of Lords on the 19th of February 1872."-See Explanatory Statement. Sir John Randolph Leslie, 3rd Baronet, generally known as Shane Leslie (24 September 1885 – 14 August 1971), was an Irish-born diplomat and writer. He was a first cousin of Sir Winston Churchill, the British war time Prime Minister. In 1908, Leslie became a Roman Catholic and supported Irish Home Rule. The Leslie’s were opposed to the Home Rule movement. The Leslie family were one of the largest land-owning families in the late 19th century. Their holdings comprised 70, 000 acres (280 km2) in counties Cavan, Donegal, Down, Fermanagh, Meath and Tyrone..."

Rare/Scarce in this condition;-Again some small worming also to the back pages, otherwise overall a good  rare/scarce copy of a highly collectable Law Book;- Canon LawAny church's or religion's laws, rules, and regulations; more commonly, the written policies that guide the administration and religious ceremonies of the Roman Catholic Church.Since the fourth century, the Roman Catholic Church has been developing regulations that have had some influence on secular (non-church-related) legal procedures. These regulations are called canons and are codified in the Code of Canon Law (in Latin, Codex juris canonici).Canon law has its origins in ancient church writings, decisions made by the general councils of local bishops, and rulings issued by the Pope. These ideas were organized in the mid–twelfth century by an Italian law teacher, Gratian. He sorted the collection into religious law, penal law, sacramental law, and other categories. Along with a set of decisions by the Pope called Decretals of Gregory IX, Gratian's work formed the main body of Canon Law for nearly eight hundred years. In 1917, Pope Benedict XV recodified (revised) the Canons. Pope John Paul II reissued the Code of Canon Law in 1983—authorizing increased participation of laity in the church, recognizing the needs of disabled people, and making other changes. A related text, the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches, was reissued by the Holy See (the seat of papal government) in 1990.In the Middle Ages, canon law was used in ecclesiastical courts (church) to decide many types of cases that in modern times are decided by civil courts, including criminal offenses. This was because most English Christians did not make a great distinction between secular and spiritual offenses. Crimes that were tried by the church included Adultery, blasphemy, slander, heresy (opposition to official religious views), money lending, and gambling. From the late fourteenth to the early sixteenth centuries church courts also heard many breach-of-faith cases concerning contracts, as well as inheritance and marriage-related cases.Criminal trial procedures in medieval church courts were the source of some features that found their way into common law. Although witnesses were considered the best source of proof of a crime under canon law, suspected offenders could also be tried because of public fame (suspicion in the community that they had committed a crime). An inquest made up of twelve men—a forerunner of royal courts' grand juries—said under oath whether public suspicion existed. If none did, then a judge had no authority to proceed. After establishing public fame, the court's next step was canonical purgation, in which the accused person swore an oath that she or he was innocent. Proof of innocence was accomplished by compurgation, in which several oath helpers would swear that they believed the oath was true. People who objected to the purgation of an accused person had the chance to prove their accusation of guilt. The use of Canon Law in Governmental decisions is not well documented. In the early fifteenth century, commissions of the English Parliament made use of canonical procedures and canon law experts to decide issues involving laws of war, diplomacy, and other questions. For example, Parliament's justification for deposing King Richard II seems to have been based on papal bulls (decrees)By the end of the twentieth century secular law had eclipsed Canon Law in most aspects of public life. Interbody disagreements within the church are now often handled administratively rather than by a tribunal, but within the confines of canon law. However, the tribunal is still the only place where Catholics can secure a marriage Annulment, and each diocese must maintain a tribunal for this purpose. Divorced Catholics who have been denied an annulment can appeal as far as the Sacred Roman Rota, whose international membership is selected by the Pope.

He then established his residence in Leeuwarden and became elder of the Reformed Church. This, seemingly weighty respect, gave him in following years, a large share of the religious political disputes, which were mainly conducted around 1618 with such intense bitterness. In that year he was delegated to the Synod of Dordrecht with pastors John Bogernan, Florentius Johannis, Phil. Dan. Eilshemius and two members of the court. Black label with gilt letter to the top of the spine;- Ex-Library copy. Numerous fold-out diagrams within the book and smaller diagrams within the text;- Errata page within. HORSLEY, SAMUEL (1733–1806), bishop of St. Asaph, son of John Horsley, by his first wife, Anne, daughter of William Hamilton, D.D., principal of Edinburgh University, was born on 15 Sept. 1733 in St. Martin's Place, by St. Martin's-in-the-Fields, at which his father was lecturer. He was baptised on 8 Oct., and Zachary Pearce, vicar of St. Martin's, afterwards bishop of Rochester, was his godfather. The bishop's grandfather, Samuel Horsley, who was born on 17 March 1669 and died on 4 July 1735, was second son of William Horsley of Broxbourne, Hertfordshire (d. 10 Feb. 1709). John Horsley, the bishop's father (1699–1777), born on 13 Nov. 1699, was educated for the dissenting ministry at the university of Edinburgh, where, on 24 Feb. 1723, ‘Johannes Horseley’ and Isaac Maddox (sic), ‘Angli præcones evangelici, academiæ olim alumni,’ were ‘nunc demum’ admitted to the degree of M.A., the diploma being given on 9 March. Neither John Horsley nor Madox (afterwards bishop of Worcester) seems to have held any dissenting pastorate; both are included by Calamy among those who conformed about 1727. John Horsley, while still lecturer at St. Martin's, became (1745) rector of Thorley, Hertfordshire; he further received from Madox the rectory of Newington Butts, Surrey, a peculiar in the gift of the Bishop of Worcester. As his second wife, he married Mary, daughter of George Leslie; by whom he had three sons and four daughters. Mary, his second daughter (1747–1824), married William Palmer, of Nazeing Park, Essex, grandfather of Roundell Palmer, first earl of Selborne. He died on 27 Nov. 1777, aged 78; his widow died on 21 Oct. 1787 at Nazeing, Essex. Horsley was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society n 1767; and secretary in 1773, but, in consequence of a difference with the president Sir Joseph Banks  he withdrew in 1784.

The book is very Rare/Scarce and in a highly collectable fine condition;-The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. Western literary study flows out of eighteenth-century works by Alexander Pope, Daniel Defoe, Henry Fielding, Frances Burney, Denis Diderot, Johann Gottfried Herder, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and others. Experience the birth of the modern novel, or compare the development of language using dictionaries and grammar discourses. The son of a refiner of iron, he was born on 17 September 1674 at Swin in the parish of Wombourne, Staffordshire. He matriculated at University College, Oxford, on 1 June 1693, graduated B.A. in 1696–7, and proceeded M.A. at St. Mary’s Hall in 1703. On 15 November 1708 he was appointed, on the recommendation of Henry Compton, Bishop of London,  library keeper at Sion College.  In 1716 came out his ‘History of our Lord, adorn'd with cuts,’ London, of which a ‘second edition, to which is prefixed the Life of the B. Virgin Mary,’ was published in 1717.Reading's major work was an edition in Greek and Latin of the early ecclesiastical historians: Eusebius Pamphilus, Socrates Scholaasticus, Hermias Sozomenus, Theodoretus, and Evagrius Scholasticus.   It was printed at the Cambridge University Press in 1720, in three folio volumes (reprinted at Turin, 1746–7). The text of Eusebius was republished at Venice, 1770, 3 vols. and again at Leipzig, 1827–8, under the care of Friedrich Adolph Heinichen. In 1724 Reading printed ‘Twenty-three Sermons of Mortification, Holiness, and of the Fear and Love of God’ (London, for the author), dedicated to the archbishop of Canterbury; the writer complained that he was ‘always destitute of any ecclesiastical dignity or revenue.’ On 15 October of the same year he received the additional office of clerk or secretary of Sion College, possibly just after the publication of the compilation ‘Bibliothecæ Cleri Londinensis in Collegio Sionensi Catalogus, duplici forma concinnatus,’ of which the first part gives the titles arranged under subjects, and the second is an alphabetical index. Reading appended a history of the college. He printed in 1728 ‘Fifty-two Sermons for every Sunday of the Year,’ London, 2 vols., again dedicated to the archbishop of Canterbury. Two more volumes appeared in 1730, a second edition was printed in 1736, and a third edition, ‘One Hundred and Sixteen Sermons preached out of the First Lessons at Morning and Evening Prayer for all Sundays in the Year,’ London, 1755, 4 vols. He published an edition of Origen  ‘de Oratione, Gr. et Lat.’ (London, sumptibus editoris), in 1728, and a sermon on the act against profane swearing in 1731.
