"The Ladies of Llangollen" called the couple Lady Eleanor Butler (1739-1829) and Miss Sarah Ponsonby (1755-1832). Butler and Ponsonby both came from the Anglo-Irish families in Ireland 1780. They settled in the town of Llangollen in Wales, and became one of his best-known couples.
Lady Eleanor Butler died in 1829, Miss Sarah Ponsonby over two years later. Their home Plas Newydd, where they lived together for nearly fifty years, is currently a museum.
1780 they bought themselves a communal home in the house Plas Newydd in Llangollen, where they lived on a small maintenance from their families. In Plas Newydd shared the bed, living, studying, walking and work to rebuild the house. Eleanor and Sarah dressed alike in shirt, jacket and skirt, they signed their letters in common and had a dog named Sappho. The ladies from Llanglollen became the epitome of what it calls "romantic friendships" between women.
Eleanor and Sarah was like "The Ladies of Llangollen" luminaries of his time. Over the years they corresponded with and visited by other famous people as poets  Wordsworth, Shelly and Byron,  the conservative politician Edmund Burke, and General Arthur Wellesley, Duke of WEllington and Author Caroline Lamb. They were also visited by the lesbians landowner Anne Lister who has written about the ladies in his famous diaries.
