Published in Amsterdam 1654. by Lodewijk Spillebout 1654;- Small 4to. Contemp. Original Vellum with handwritten title and date to the spine;-. Engraved frontispiect amonst the title page;- The libertine poetry of Matthijs van de Merwede van Clootwijk (ca. 1625-1680). Now his love-songs are more "spiritual" and include a poetical translation of the Song of Salomon, as well as of the Penitential Psalms. Matthijs van de Merwede van Clootwijk (ca. 1625-1680), was a member of an important Dutch noble family. After his studies in Leyden, he left in 1646 for England, then went to France and Italy, where he led a frivolous life in Rome, Venice and Naples. He also met Dutch painters and poets living there, like Adriaan van Essesteyn and Reinier Anslo. In 1650 he returned to the Netherlands to marry. The exact date of his death remains unknown, but according to rumours, he died from the terrible effects of the unbridled sensual life he had led in Italy. Published in London by The Chiswick Press;- Poems by Thomas Gray. 1887 Contents include Memoir, Lecture, and miscellaneous poems such as Ode on the Spring, Ode on the Death of a Favorite Cat, drowned in a Tub of Gold Fishes, Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College, Hymn to Adversity, The Fatal Sisiers, an Ode, The Descent of Odin, an Ode, Epitaph on Sir William Williams, Elegy Written in a Country Church-Yard, and other various pieces and Translations into English Verse, Poemata, Translations into Latin Verse, etc., The Honorable Horace Walpole contributed a four-page biography of the author, included is A Lecture Delivered Before the Eton Literary Society, Oct. 16, 1886 (36 pages). Beautifully executed black and white engravings by Charles and E. Radclyffe. 169 pages, there is some scattered foxing (light browning) on about 20 various pages including the title page with facing vignette otherwise a beautifully bound book. THIS BOOK HAS BEEN BOUND BY RIVIERE & SON (signed binding on front-endpaper), marbled endpapers, wonderful gold tooling oncovers with gold stamped coat of arms on both covers (lion with eight cross/cross-like symbols., ;- All page edges gilt (gold). A most handsome copy. Beautifully bounded.

Edition;- [2, errata], with the half title, and full title page & A List of Subscribers, 4 engraved vignettes in text. the four engravings are by S Wale and C Grignion ; - 1. Edge Hill tower 2. Warwick Castle 3. Ruins of Kenilworth Castle 4. Two women, sheep, arms and weapons - perhaps trophies of war + an unsigned tailpiece. Four Books in One;- Original dirt-grey paper covers with a rebound with three quarter brown leather with marble boards. A fine copy of a highly collectable book. Printed by Bowyer in editions of 600 royal quarto and 600 demi -quarto; this seems to be the larger of the two issues [285mm tall to paper size]. but in any case, this is the scarce sole printing of an English classic of topographical poetry, a worthy successor to Denham's 'Coopers Hill' of a century earlier. Scarce & Rare.
