Pages 56. two page engravings present and 15 engraved plates, of which 13 foldout;-  Original brown leather to spine and green marbled paper to the covers;- Gilt lettering along the spine.  An attractive calligraphy and handwriting manual. Second Italian edition, first published in 1796, and based on Paillasson's L'art de l'ecriture, which formed part of the Encyclopédie. Contains a description of the instruments of writing (inks, paper, etc.) and a brief history of writing systems followed by detailed annotations to the engraved plates. The two first plates demonstrate the correct writing position and how to hold the hand. Further plates illustrate how to cut the quill, how to make the basic strokes in different writing styles, etc. The plates are taken from a French version of this work. This is very Rare in such fine condition;- All the plates are in fine condition and present.

Nicholas Caussin (1580-1651) was a French Jesuit and confessor to King Louis XIII. However, after some notable friction with Cardinal Richelieu and some controversy over his refusal to reveal what was said to him by the king in confession, he was exiled to a city in Lower Britanny, only to return to Paris after the cardinal's death. The present offering, Caussin's most famous work, is a moral opus, illustrated by numerous stories, which went through many translations and printings.

Begun by John Stow: Continued And Augmented with matters Forraigne and Domestique, Ancient and Moderne, unto the end of this present yeere, 1615. By Edmund Howes, Gent.

      Published in London:  by Thomas Adams, 1615;-  Original full brown leather binding with a gilt crest to both front and back covers, a reddish leather  label to the spine with gilt lettering within. An extensive Index to the back pages;- This is a Scarce/Rare book, complete;- A highly collectable condition;-

 Stow is regarded as the most accurate and impartial of the English chroniclers of the sixteenth century. His Annales originally appeared in 1580 as The Chronicles of England from Brute, and was first published under its familiar title in 1592, with a short appendix on the universities of Britain. It was essentially an expansion of his earlier Summarie of Englyshe Chronicles. It was re-edited, continued, and considerably altered in 1615 by Edmund Howes, with an added description by Sir George Buc on the ‘University of London’  Present in this Edition;-(i.e. the Inns of Court and other educational establishments of the Metropolis). This edition brings the history forward to 1615. A member of the Society of Antiquaries, and friend and contemporary of William Lambarde, Camden and Fleetwood, Stow was also a zealous collector of printed books and manuscripts, and amassed a valuable library. His collecting pursuits aroused the suspicion of the authorities, and he was charged several times with being in possession of dangerous and ‘popish’ writings. In later years he was reduced to living on charitable contributions.
